What actually moves the price up or down
The per-kW rate is a useful starting point, but three things commonly shift the final number:
- Switchboard and phase. Larger systems (typically above ~5–10kW on single phase) may need a switchboard upgrade or a single-to-three-phase upgrade to avoid export limits.
- Roof access and pitch. Steep, multi-storey or tile roofs take longer to install safely than a simple single-storey metal roof.

At the same self-consumption ratio, payback comes out roughly the same across all three sizes — because both the cost and the benefit scale together with system size. What actually moves your payback period is your self-consumption percentage, not how big the system is. A household that shifts more usage into daylight hours (running the dishwasher, EV charging or pool pump midday instead of at night) improves payback at any system size; oversizing a system well beyond what your roof or usage pattern can realistically self-consume is what erodes it.
Financing and ongoing costs
